A listed, 16th century stronghold house on the banks of the river Dordogne.
This manor house is some 30 kilometres from Bergerac and its airport; 30 minutes from Saint-Emilion; 70 minutes from Bordeaux; and less than 30 minutes from the A89 motorway. The village is half-way between Castillon-la-Bataille and Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. Once a major port on the river Dordogne, the town has an interesting architectural layout including embankments and slipways. Barges would travel along the river, bringing wood from CorrÚze to Libourne and Bordeaux for the manufacture of wine barrels and stakes for vine stock.
The first traces of the building, dating back to the beginning of the 15th century, were on the bank of the river Dordogne, where it was used as a tollhouse and as protection against English troops. At this time, it belonged to Armand-Eyquem-de-Podensac then, the noble lady Jeanne-Ferrand, wife of an equerry, took ownership of the premises. Its construction, using small, irregular quarry stone blocks and featuring numerous gunloops, possibly dates back to the 15th century. In the 17th century, a stairway tower was added and fireplaces were installed upstairs. The entrance door, on the west side, was added or restored at the same time. Neglected since the 1950’s, the current owners have begun a series of renovation works to save the building.
The manor houseSeveral factors indicate that the dwelling existed prior to all the other features. The stairway turret and the tower were probably added in the 17th century. The present interior layout, over two floors, comprises three adjoining rooms. Listed as a French Historic Monument, the building recently underwent a first set of renovation works. The outside walls, the roofing framework and the roof were completely renovated in keeping with good trade practices supervised by architects from “Bâtiments de France”. The house, with a facade going up to approx. 8 m, measures 15x8 m. Its gable roof is covered with Roman tiles. The large tower goes up to a height of 10 m. It is topped with flat roof tiles above a single cornice. The stairway turret, approx. 9.5 m tall, adjoins the south corner of the house. The two are not however toothed. The house spans a floor surface area of approx. 270 m². A 42 m² mezzanine could also be converted.
Ground floor
This level comprises three large rooms: an entrance hall, a kitchen and a vaulted cellar in the large tower. Each room features remains of wooden uprights from partitions which date from the 20th century. The floors are currently made of packed mud. A fireplace backs on to a load-bearing wall on the kitchen side. The semi-underground cellar has a vaulted, lime-pointed, stone ceiling. The other ceilings feature exposed beams. All the rooms have windows.
First floor
The access stairway in the turret is in poor condition and in need of restoration. The parquet flooring is made of poplar wood. The upstairs is taken up by three large adjoining rooms. The bedroom in the tower includes a 17th century, monumental fireplace, featuring geometric decor composed of hearts, squares and circles. The exposed roofing framework was completely redone in 2019.
Second floor
An attic spanning approx. 40 m² under the rafters could easily be converted. This stronghold house would, then, have five or six bedrooms. The outbuildingsA courtyard, enclosed by a stone wall, adjoins the manor house. A barn spanning approx. 200 m² completes the property. It also awaits full renovation works.
The grounds extend over almost seven hectares. Isolated, they border the river Dordogne, with a 900 m stretch of bank and a beach where it is possible to take a dip.
