A 19th century chateau and its outbuildings, in 8,600 m² of parklands, just 50 minutes from Bordeaux.
This estate, on the edge of the Gascony Landes forest in the south of the French department of Gironde, is in a town with some 5,000 inhabitants. With a recognised historic and cultural heritage, it has all the amenities and facilities of a dynamic town: a hospital, all schools, restaurants and shops. The motorway, just 5 minutes away, puts Toulouse 2 hours away and Pau just 1½ hours away. The nearest train station is 15 km away.
This property, where two streets intersect, has three entrances. The main entrance, reached via the road leading to the historic town centre, has impressive wrought iron gates that open on to a driveway, leading across parklands to a carpark on the opposite side. The south-facing chateau dominates the parklands, protected by a wall, covered in places with dense vegetation. The outbuildings are on the north side. Separated from the chateau by a courtyard, they are laid out together in front of the carpark, a grassy area and a bamboo grove.
The chateauMajestically dominating the neighbouring houses, this Renaissance style chateau, dating from the mid-19th century, appears to have been constructed on old foundations. Spanning three levels under attic space, it is laid out as a single, robust, rectangular building. All the openings on the main facade, tall windows and oculi, indicate the luminosity to be found in the numerous rooms, three of which on the first floor feature balconies with stone balustrades. Two chimneys on either side of the building dominate the slate roof.
Ground floor
Set in the centre of the chateau’s facade, the main entrance is a French window which opens into a vast through vestibule. The latter leads, on one side, to a large reception room and, on the other, to a dining room, with parquet flooring, followed by a study and a bedroom. Further on, a kitchen, with Gironde stone floor tiles, is formed from two rooms, their separation marked by a stone vault. It protrudes from the main building, bringing to mind the existence of an initial building. A veranda, laid out longwise alongside the chateau and adjoining the reception rooms, opens on to the rear courtyard. At its end, an independent studio flat, resembling an annexe building, opens on one side of the chateau. Two cellars at each end of the building complete this level.
First floor
This level can be reached via a back wooden stairway, going up from the kitchen. In a corridor off the vestibule at the other end of the house, a stone, dogleg stairway, with wrought iron railings and a wooden handrail, also goes up to the first floor. The landing, followed by a long corridor, provides successive access to five bedrooms, laid out all on one side. Each has its own bath or shower room.
Second floor
The layout of this level is similar to that of the first floor. A long corridor, with parquet flooring and ending at the back stairway, provides access to four bedrooms, each with its own bath or shower room, followed by a fitted studio flat.
Attic
Three separate stairways go up from the second floor to the various sections of attic space which can be glimpsed on each facade from outside the building. The outbuildingsSeparated from the chateau on the north side by a courtyard, with access to the adjacent street, these outbuildings reflect a refined, more contemporary style. They comprise two separate sections: the commercial section, as imagined and designed by the current owners, includes a vast function room and a holiday accommodation rental unit with quarry stone block walls. A professional kitchen, bathroom and toilet facilities, two laundry rooms and a changing room are perfectly laid out. At the end of …
