House Charolles (71)

Exceptional 17th century residence Renovated by an architect and local craftsmen in 2014, this beautiful Charolais house has preserved and enhanced all the characteristic features of beautiful 17th century homes: French ceiling, stone fireplace, old-fashioned floor tiles, parquet floors, beams, etc... With its 11 rooms spread over 242 m² (2,076 sq ft) of living space, this charming house has been designed like a boudoir: elegant, warm and welcoming. The entrance hall is remarkably colourful, with a French ceiling in blond oak, a wooden staircase and beautiful cement tiles on the floor. On one side, it distributes a comfortable 30 m² living room with a stone fireplace, on the other side, the breakfast area with a 40 m² equipped and open kitchen. The stairs, but also a private lift, give access to the 5 bedrooms, 4 of which are equipped with a bathroom or a shower room with private individual toilets. A small lounge with a balcony, a storeroom fitted out in the former garage, a laundry room and a sewing room complete the living spaces. A vaulted cellar houses the boiler room. In the partially converted attic, there is still 100 m² (1,076 sq ft) to be converted. The beautifully flowered garden has a well, a covered area and a summer garden with a barbecue area. Ideal for receiving family or friends, this house can also be used as a bed and breakfast. Close to the town centre, schools and shops. Situated 40 minutes from the TGV train station at Mâcon-Loché or Creusot-Montceau and 1h30 from Lyon. Information and visit: 06 31 50 74 20 Les honoraires sont à la charge du vendeur. House with pool Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire (58)

A country house with an orchard, an 18th-century dovecote and bucolic grounds, nestled in Burgundy, two hours from Paris. Two stone pillars mark the property’s entrance. A track leads up to an old farm building made of stone with a tiled roof. When you reach it, you see a complex of buildings arranged around a courtyard that is partly grassed and partly gravelled for vehicles to park on it: a house faces west, a lower building adjoins the house, a large barn stands on the court’s north side, and a dovecote and swimming pool lie on the south side. The dovecote is capped with a hipped roof crowned with finials, as is the house. All the roofs are covered with flat Burgundy tiles. The house has two hipped dormers on its roof. The quoins and door and window surrounds are made of dressed stone left exposed. In the lower building that extends the house on one side, a covered passageway leads to a vast garden behind it. Trees of different species tower here. The garden offers a sweeping view of the hills and the rooftops of the old village nearby. Back in the courtyard, beside the swimming pool, stone steps lead down to an orchard enclosed with dry-stone walls.

Property Autun (71)

Near Autun, a late 18th-century residence and its wooded park of over 9,000m². Located on the site of 'La Verrerie,' the property dates back to 1752 when Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre founded a glass workshop that produced bottles for the wines of Burgundy and Champagne. In 1830, a building was constructed on the site to accommodate the factory director. The entrance to the park, where some of the workshops used to be, is marked by two columns supporting a wrought-iron gate. To the right of the gate is a small house from the 18th-century, and to the left is an old orangery. The park unfolds around the remains of a circular body of water and was transformed into an acclimatization garden in the 19th century. It features remarkable specimens of plane trees, maritime pines, blue spruces, pagoda trees, and two rows of linden trees that frame a terrace with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The residence is very wide, spanning two levels topped with attics and made up of two parts: from the left, a small, square building with a flat roof due to a later architectural modification, followed by the main body, very elongated, with a two-pitched roof and harmoniously structured with regularly spaced windows and entrance doors across the facade, all of which open onto the park. The 'director's house' adopted the typical architectural model of the adjacent old workers' settlement. As a result, the building with windows grouped two by two gives the impression of being composed of numerous small houses attached to each other. The overhanging roof with mechanical tiles and the plastered walls with faux rustication allowed it to blend seamlessly with the glass workshop buildings. Nevertheless, it was indeed a bourgeois residence, featuring both a main entrance and a service entrance. The house only has windows on its west facing facade as the architect designed it as a series of interconnected rooms. Despite this, the abundance of openings allows for plenty of natural light inside. The entire property is enclosed by walls facing the street and by hedges elsewhere, ensuring the occupants' tranquility.

House Beaune (21)

A former coaching inn close to Beaune, partly dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The old estate comprises a number of detached buildings grouped around a shared courtyard. Most of the walls are of stone and the roofs, with a few exceptions, are clad with flat tiles. The various dwellings, although of varying heights, all have two storeys. Probably dating back to the 17th century, the oldest building on the east side of the street has half-timbered walls and features a covered gallery on the courtyard side. Continuing southwards, there is an 18th-century building with the entrance porch to the courtyard, linking it to the 17th-century house. To the north are a small house, known as the 'steward's house', and a more recent abutting barn. Also extending to the north, almost closing off the courtyard to the east, there are a number of old barns and sheds, as well as other outbuildings, used for agricultural purposes. Former stables, converted into a hay store, stand in the middle of the courtyard. The grounds, covering an area of around 2,300 m², are accessed via a track between these buildings to the north and the residential buildings to the south and east. To the south, along an east-west axis that closes off the complex, a house built in the 1920s links up with the 18th-century building to the east, which has a facade on the street side.

Castle 20
28

Castle Beaune (21)

In Burgundy, near Beaune and its vineyards, a 19th century chateau with 17th and 18th century outbuildings and a 4 ha wooded park. You have to leave the main road to discover the little village which stretches languidly along a street lined with discreet properties. Captivated by the delightful scenery, visitors often pass the chateau without noticing it, as the setting is very understated. Its surrounding wall is enhanced by a high gate covered with holly, laurel and lilac. A modest central gate opens onto a gravel courtyard with two unevenly shaped lawns in the centre, separated by paving stones. The castle reveals only part of its facade, its discreet double-leaf entrance door is sheltered under a small canopy. The eye is inevitably drawn to the large 18th century farmhouse covered with an abundance of small flat tiles. The building, which bears witness to the winegrowing vocation of the site, comprises three ground floor cellars that have contributed to the reputation of a family of Burgundian merchants for two centuries. The 19th century chateau, next to the cellars, was probably built on the foundations of the 16th century castle which had been completely dismantled. Designed as a prestigious and pleasurable residence, the reception rooms face the park, exposed to the light of the setting sun with originally a view of the distant hillsides. A wide passageway, clear of the foliage on the left, provides a link between the courtyard and the park, the 17th century lodge and the barn. From the village, a narrow road running alongside the property allows direct access to the lodge via a small gate. Turning around, the chateau reveals its clear and symmetrical facade with an elegant canopy. The landscaped park, which could be inspired by Joseph Addison, majestically unfolds its greenery and tall trees, letting the springs, sometimes channelled by narrow canals, freely overflow onto the lawn. It is not uncommon to see herons, grey cranes and wild ducks frolicking on these natural mirrors of water. Although it is adjacent to large buildings that look like old outbuildings, the property is well hidden from view, protected by dry stone walls, streams, tall trees and coppice without being completely enclosed.
