A spectacular medieval chateau, restored with hotel-standard renovations, nestled in France’s beautiful Berry province. The chateau’s emblematic shape, with its tall towers and vast roofs, seems to rise up out of the landscape. The edifice was built in the 15th century. It originally had 14 towers and a keep, which made it one of the main strongholds in the region. During the French Wars of Religion, it became the property of Protestant families. Upon the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, the chateau was partly dismantled to weaken this Huguenot stronghold. Today, seven towers remain. The chateau was extensively restored in 1850 based on proposals from the famous French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Over the past thirty years, it has been renovated fully and masterfully. Several of its towers and even the keep have kept their original roof frames, which is truly remarkable given the changes made to the edifice over the centuries. All the elevations are made of rubble stone with pointing. The keep’s facade and the crenellations along the top of the gatehouse’s towers are made of ashlar. The keep, the main section and four of the seven towers are crowned with tall, steep slate roofs. The other towers have flat roofs, hidden behind crenellations. A series of outbuildings are grouped together and set back from the main edifice. They are arranged around several courtyards. The grounds slope down to a river. A swimming pool has been built on a grassy terrace. And a tennis court lies discreetly behind an outbuilding. From the property’s commanding position, you can admire far-reaching views of the surrounding landscape.

Ref 4825: 15th-century castle and its hamlet for sale in the Berry region Located in Berry, in the Indre department, this remarkable castle captivates visitors with its distinctively medieval character. Situated in the heart of France, it is approximately 300 km from Paris via the A20 motorway, known as the Occitane, and 30 km from Châteauroux, the local town centre. For everyday amenities, the charming village of Argenton-sur-Creuse is less than ten minutes away. The site can also be reached by helicopter. A veritable fortress, the building overlooks the banks of a small river, the Bouzanne. The gently rolling surrounding landscape marks the south-eastern boundary of the Brenne, also known as the ‘Land of a Thousand Ponds’. Renowned for its unspoilt nature and designated a Regional Nature Park, this region offers numerous opportunities for relaxation and exploration. Birdwatchers come from all over the world to observe waterfowl and migratory birds, whilst hikers, cyclists and horse riders enjoy the well-maintained paths winding between the ponds. Hunting enthusiasts also find favourable terrain here, whilst respecting responsible hunting practices. On the edge of a hamlet, its privacy protected by a wall stretching nearly two kilometres, the fortress stands at the heart of its grounds. It enjoys a remarkable panorama over the Bouzanne Valley, forming a veritable natural amphitheatre where the views stretch for nearly ten kilometres. This spectacular setting had, in fact, caught the attention of Michael Jackson, who had considered establishing his French estate there in the late 1990s. The castle is one of the few largely preserved examples of 15th-century military architecture. Built of dressed stone and rubble masonry, and still partially surrounded by moats, it comprises an entrance gatehouse flanked by crenellated towers, which leads into a first, square courtyard. Two wings of the building flank this courtyard. At the far end of this courtyard, a fixed bridge leads, beneath an imposing keep, to a second courtyard. The dismantling of the curtain walls and certain towers has transformed this inner courtyard into a terraced esplanade offering views, to the north, of the wooded banks of the Bouzanne, a small river flowing at the foot of the castle. To the south of the courtyard, the main residence adjoining the keep, rising four storeys high beneath a slate roof, is defended on three of its corners by imposing towers with conical roofs and machicolations. Entering this residence at terrace level via the stair tower that leads to it, one encounters, in turn, a reception room for guests with its monumental fireplace, a study in the south tower, a former bakery converted into a billiard room, a room known as the ‘courtroom’ with a monumental fireplace, and a chapel. Via the south-east tower, there is access to the bathrooms and sauna located on the ground floor of the south wing of the courtyard. In the north-corner tower, there is a separate bedroom with a beautiful fireplace and en-suite bathroom. On the upper floors, accessible by lift: On the first floor of the main building, a semi-professional kitchen, a dining room with beautiful 17th-century wood panelling, a small green sitting room in the west tower, a large sitting room with a ceiling painted in the 18th-century style, and the executive office in the east tower. On the second floor there are seven bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom or shower room, some featuring monumental fireplaces and seating areas. A spacious room with high ceilings and a gallery completes the layout and is designated as the armoury. On the third floor there are eight bedrooms, each with a bathroom or shower room, some featuring monumental fireplaces and armchairs. On the fourth floor there are six bedrooms, each with a bathroom or shower room, some featuring monumental fireplaces and built-in seats. A library, covered by a four-part ribbed vault with voussoirs, completes the ensemble. There are numerous outbuildings. Four of these form part of the castle complex: The south wing of the square tower, spread over two floors. It houses the boiler room and a staff flat. The north wing of the square tower is dedicated to technical activities, with storage rooms, cold rooms and a large workshop. On the upper floor, three large brick-vaulted rooms could be converted into a superb reception area. A large terrace covers them. Beneath the terrace lies a vast vaulted room known as the Knights’ Hall. The other outbuildings are clustered in the southern part of the grounds, forming a sort of hamlet: The main one is the Bergerie, a large 19th-century farm building converted into a conference centre. With a total of nearly 300 sqm of living space, it houses two meeting rooms and sixteen rooms, including staff accommodation and two holiday cottages. Six residential houses, likely built in the 19th century, currently unused but weatherproofed. A garage with a covered courtyard and a charging station for electric vehicles. There is also, at the entrance to the estate, a pumping station housed in a hipped-roof building. Built on a plateau overlooking the Bouzanne valley, the castle covers just over 15 hectares (37 acres), which can be divided into: - A vast park, planted with remarkable local tree species (cedars, poplars, birches, oaks), surrounds the castle. It includes an enclosed terraced garden which is soon to be restored to its former status as a vegetable garden. Beautiful paths allow visitors to admire this remarkable example of medieval architecture from every angle. - A 12 x 6 m swimming pool, with a terrace of cut stone and changing rooms in a tower. It is situated at the foot of the north-west corner of the esplanade - To the north, a hillside woodland that slopes down to the path running alongside the river. - Finally, meadows covering an area of 3 hectares complete the estate. All furniture and operating equipment is included in the sale price. Ref.4807 : 15th-C. chateau with moats and a dovecote set in a 7,7 acres park in Burgundy The château is situated on the outskirts of a small, vibrant town in Burgundy, within the Nièvre department, home to 3,600 inhabitants and traversed by three waterways, including the Nivernais Canal and the Yonne River. An ancient medieval town and former capital of timber rafting, it has been described as the “Venice of the Nièvre” by the writer Romain Rolland. It lies at the heart of the Vaux d’Yonne and on the threshold of the Morvan. Vézelay is 20 km away, and Auxerre is 44 km distant. A railway station connects the town to Paris in just under three hours, while the capital can be reached by car in approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. The town has preserved a remarkable medieval heritage, notably a collegiate church regarded as a jewel of Gothic art, alongside several half-timbered houses dating from the 15th and 16th C.. All essential shops are available, including grocery stores and organic producers, together with a local producers’ market. The town has successfully maintained its full range of public services and continues to foster a vibrant cultural life, with a media library, a museum, and a cinema. From the street, a tree-lined avenue leads to the chateau entrance. It is surrounded by magnificent moats that are still filled with water, fed by the River Sauzay. They are between 8 and 20 metres wide and are largely stone-built. A stone bridge dating from the 15th C., the only access to the château, spans the moat. The entrance, opposite the bridge, is through a carriage gate in the middle of a square tower. The terrace, on which the château stands surrounded by its moat, covers nearly 3,500 sqm and offers perfect tranquillity and privacy. To the right of the square tower stands the chateau and to the left a residential wing. These two buildings are connected at the first floor level. Once through the porch, we discover the large terrace surrounded by water and a garden planted with beautiful trees. A circular corner tower, featuring a secondary 15th-C. stone spiral staircase, provides access to the first floor of both the chateau and the dwelling. These are identical in appearance and height; the façades are lime-plastered, the corner buttresses are stone, and the roofs are covered with perfectly maintained old flat tiles. All the windows are fitted with solid wooden shutters. French windows provide direct access to the garden from all the ground floor rooms. The château faces north-west and south-east. The interior of the château has largely retained its original layout and has undergone few alterations, except for a discreet extension on the west side during the 19th–C., which is virtually imperceptible. On the ground floor, from the small entrance hall, one is immediately confronted by a wide 15th-C. staircase crafted from Burgundy stone, adorned with an ornate wrought-iron balustrade. To the right, a passage leads to a spacious kitchen/dining room of 31 sqm, featuring two windows and a French door opening onto a terrace at the edge of the moat. The floors are laid with traditional terracotta tiles, the ceilings are of exposed beams, and there is an original stone fireplace. To the left of the hall, two elegant, through reception rooms of 33 and 39 sqm each enjoy marble fireplaces and direct access to the garden. One of these rooms boasts a herringbone parquet floor. The ceiling height throughout is three metres. Behind the staircase are a pantry, a laundry/heating room, and a WC. On the first floor, there is a 25 sqm study, five bedrooms ranging from 10 to 26 sqm, two bathrooms with WC, and a dressing room that could easily be converted into a bathroom. A large billiard room of 42 sqm features two French doors, an exposed-beam ceiling, and a grey Saint-Anne marble fireplace. Above this level lies a spacious attic of nearly 120 sqm, with five dormer windows and impressive timbering, offering numerous possibilities for additional accommodation—bedrooms, bathrooms, or a games room. Finally, a stone spiral staircase provides access to the second floor of the square tower, opening into a charming 13 sqm through-room, reminiscent of a lookout, with views either toward the entrance or the park. The château as a whole is meticulously maintained and exudes considerable charm. The total surface area, including the attic, amounts to 430 sqm. Outbuildings : THE DWELLING Located on the opposite side of the square tower, forming an L-shaped wing of the château, this annex occupies approximately 90 sqm over two levels, with an attic. A charming entrance, paved with antique terracotta tiles, leads to the left into a spacious reception room of around 40 sqm, featuring a large French door opening onto the garden. The floors are of terracotta, the ceiling displays exposed beams, and there is a stone fireplace. Opposite, a kitchen provides access to a terrace along the edge of the moat, followed by a pantry and a bathroom. Upstairs, accessed by a wooden staircase, there is a large bedroom or games room of approximately 45 sqm, with a beautifully crafted French-style ceiling, and it is connected to the square tower. Additionally, there is another attractive bedroom with wooden floors and a bathroom. This annex, totaling about 180 sqm, is full of charm. It could serve as a guesthouse or children’s residence, or alternatively be adapted for commercial use such as a bed-and-breakfast or holiday rental. THE DOVECOTE Situated slightly apart from the château, yet still within the terrace/garden enclosed by the moat, the dovecote is an impressive, square-plan building spanning three levels. Its corners are reinforced with stone, and it features a well-maintained four-sloped roof covered with traditional flat tiles. At present, the ground floor serves as a workshop. Land : Covering a total area of 7.7 acres, the property comprises a garden terrace surrounded by a moat, meadows beyond the moat, and, on the other side of the Sauzay stream, a woodland area of approximately 15,000 sqm. The immediate neighbours are the old farmhouse to the east and the old mill to the west. The setting is idyllic, with unobstructed views of the countryside and wooded hillsides. The property is perfectly peaceful, free from any nuisance and very well maintained. The garden terrace features some beautiful trees. There is also a well and a wooden canopy.
